Quickstep Microstep Motor Driver
|
|
The Quickstep driver is designed to be a low cost and very compact motor driver for two phase stepper motors. It
will power motors ranging in size from size 23 all the way up to size 42 motors requiring a maximum of 6 amps per
phase. This driver uses a bipolar pulse width modulation type circuit with state of the art surface mount electronic
components. Measuring just 2.0 in square x 0.6 in thick this driver is one of the smallest and most efficient designs
available today. Current levels up to 3 amps per phase require no heat sink due to the super low resistance mosfet
power transistors. This driver may be small but the power transistors are capable of bursts of over 40 amps so it
runs effortlessly at its rated 6 amps/phase. It can be used with all two-phase motors having 4, 6 or 8 input wires.
Microstepping capability down to 1/16 steps allows very smooth low speed motion with minimal concern for motor
resonance effects. A conveniently mounted potentiometer adjusts motor current. Externally mounted jumper tabs
are used to set the desired step size.
|
The driver circuit automatically reduces motor current to 40% of the set value if no step signals are received for 10
seconds. This feature eliminates unnecessary overheating of motors, and power supplies during periods of
prolonged inactivity. Input signals to control the motor can be from a PC printer port or any other 5 volt logic
control system. PC control programs for CNC control of stepper motors through the printer port such as Mach 3,
Quickstep, TurboCNC, KCam etc. can be used to send input signals directly to this driver. "Software only" type
CNC control programs will usually be limited in output step frequency. For optimum high speed performance at
1/16 step setting see hot link to Quickstep version 4 with PulsePacer hardware which can control output
step signals more precisely at speeds up to 80,000 steps/second. Driver comes with an 8 page printed
specifications sheet with all hookup and mounting instructions.
